Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå University earns Tree Campus USA honor for fifth consecutive year

Published: April 4, 2014.

For the fifth consecutive year, Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå University has been named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its continuous commitment to effective community forestry and environmental responsibility.

Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå University, praised those involved in initiatives to maintain a sustainable and beautiful campus. “The Groundskeeping staff, led by Dwight DeVries, is to be commended for its fine success in landscaping, careful implementation of sound environmental practices and resourcefulness in using native plants and trees in landscaping,” he said. “Multiple varieties of trees now beautify the campus, including spectacular flowering species, stately evergreens, traditional long-lived trees, and some selected for size or color. Thoughtful stewardship has been demonstrated in providing a breathtaking and sustainable environment for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and many campus visitors.”

Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå University achieved the designation as a Tree Campus USA once again by meeting the required five core standards for sustainable campus forestry: sponsoring a Tree Advisory Committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Tree Campus USA, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Tree Campus USA is supported by a generous grant from Toyota.

Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå University is a Catholic university in the Lasallian tradition offering distinctive undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 6,600 traditional and adult students. Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå offers multiple campus locations, online degree programs, and a variety of formats that provide accessibility and convenience to a growing student population. Sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå prepares intellectually engaged, ethically grounded, globally connected, and socially responsible graduates. The seventh largest private not-for-profit university in Illinois, Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå has been nationally recognized by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. Visit for further information.
